paper lanterns
Lit floating decorations
Paper lanterns are decorative light covers made of thin paper stretched over a wire or bamboo frame, typically collapsible and often spherical or cylindrical.
They range from simple white globes used as lampshades to elaborate painted designs for festivals and celebrations.
Chinese and Japanese traditions feature them prominently: The garden was strung with paper lanterns.
Sky lanterns—small hot-air balloons made of paper—float upward when lit.
