water lanterns
Luminous river offerings
Water lanterns are floating lanterns designed to drift on water, typically made of paper or biodegradable materials with a candle or light inside.
They're released on lakes, rivers, or oceans during festivals and memorial ceremonies, particularly in East Asian traditions: Thousands of water lanterns floated downstream during the festival.
The practice often honors deceased loved ones or marks spiritual occasions.
