sidelock
Hasidic hair strand
A sidelock is a long lock of hair left uncut at the temple, hanging down the side of the face.
The term most often refers to the payot worn by Orthodox Jewish men, particularly Hasidic Jews, in observance of biblical commandment: His sidelocks curled past his ears.
Sidelock also names a type of firearm mechanism where the lock is mounted on a side plate rather than within the stock.
