shrublands

Low woody biome

Shrublands are areas dominated by shrubs—woody plants shorter than trees, often with multiple stems.

These ecosystems occur where conditions limit tree growth: arid regions, high elevations, or poor soils.

The Mediterranean shrublands burned easily in summer.

Regional types include chaparral, maquis, and fynbos.

Also called scrublands.
