mallee
Multi-stemmed eucalyptus shrub
Mallee refers to shrubby eucalyptus trees that grow in dense thickets, typically with multiple stems rising from a single underground root system.
The term extends to the scrubland ecosystem these plants dominate, characteristic of arid and semi-arid regions in southern Australia: We drove through miles of mallee before reaching the coast.
The wood burns hot and was traditionally used for fuel.
