should

Expectation of action

Should, a modal verb, has several uses that give aspectual information about the main verb, which is in infinitive form after should.

You should go expresses obligation or advisability.

You should have gone suggests a failed obligation in the past.

In questions, the speaker is seeking advice: Should I make another appointment?

The modal verb imparts the idea of reasonable expectation: We should be there by midnight.

Should can express an idea of futurity in the past, but this usage is more common in British than American English (where would is more likely): They realized that they should have to sell the farm.
