shall

Intend to, formally

Shall is a modal verb that provides aspectual information about the main verb (which is always a present or perfect infinitive).

It is typically used in the first person (with I and we).

Shall can be a formal or emphatic way of talking about the future in declarative sentences: We shall be more than happy to accept your invitation.

In questions, however, shall indicates a degree of uncertainty and may suggest a request for advice: Shall I wait up for you?

When used with second- and third-person subjects or pronouns, shall has emphatic force and can suggest a command: You shall deliver the entire sum tomorrow, under penalty of arrest.
