hammered coins
Hand-beaten metal money
Hammered coins are coins produced by the ancient method of striking a blank metal disc between two dies with a hammer.
This technique, used from antiquity through the seventeenth century, produced coins with slightly irregular shapes and uneven edges.
The term distinguishes these from later milled coins made by machine: The hoard contained medieval hammered coins from several English reigns.
