shibboleth
Tribal identifying phrase
A shibboleth is a word, phrase, or custom that distinguishes one group from another—particularly one that marks outsiders who can't produce it authentically.
The term comes from a biblical story where pronunciation of the word revealed enemy soldiers.
By extension, a shibboleth is any practice or belief that serves as a test of group membership: Opposition to the death penalty became a liberal shibboleth.
The word often carries skepticism about whether such markers reflect genuine values or mere tribal signaling.
