shibboleths

Insider language tests

Shibboleths are words, phrases, customs, or beliefs that distinguish one group from another.

The term comes from a Hebrew word that ancient Gileadites used to identify enemy Ephraimites, who couldn't pronounce the "sh" sound correctly.

Today it often carries a dismissive tone, suggesting the marker is arbitrary or the belief outdated: The old shibboleths about women in the workplace have largely fallen away.

A shibboleth may also be a truism or platitude that members of a group repeat without much thought.
