shelterbelts
Protective tree rows
Shelterbelts are rows of trees or shrubs planted to protect an area from wind, reduce soil erosion, and create favorable microclimates for crops or livestock.
Farmers commonly plant them along field edges on the Great Plains and other wind-prone regions.
A well-established shelterbelt can reduce wind speed for a distance of ten to twenty times its height.
The shelterbelt kept the topsoil from blowing away during the drought.
