windbreaks

Rows blocking gusts

Windbreaks are barriers that reduce wind speed and protect what lies behind them.

They're typically rows of trees or shrubs planted along field edges to shield crops, livestock, or buildings: The farmer planted windbreaks along the north side of the property.

Fences and walls serve the same purpose.

The singular windbreak refers to any such protective barrier.
