shade-grown coffee
Forest-farmed caffeine source
Shade-grown coffee is coffee cultivated under a canopy of trees rather than in full sun.
The traditional method preserves forest habitat for birds and other wildlife, reduces the need for pesticides, and is said to produce richer flavor through slower ripening.
It contrasts with sun-grown coffee, which dominates modern production: I only buy shade-grown coffee for environmental reasons.
