tree-lines

Alpine forest edges

Tree-lines is the plural of tree line, the boundary on a mountain or in polar regions beyond which trees cannot grow due to harsh conditions.

Below the tree line, forests thrive; above it, only shrubs, grasses, or bare rock survive: We hiked past the tree-lines of several peaks.

The term also refers to rows of trees planted along roads or property boundaries.
