General Sherman
Record-holding sequoia
General Sherman refers to William Tecumseh Sherman, the Union general whose 1864 March to the Sea through Georgia became synonymous with total war—destroying infrastructure and civilian resources to break Confederate resistance.
The name attaches to things named in his honor: the General Sherman tree in California is the world's largest by volume.
He took a General Sherman approach to the problem—ruthlessly thorough.
