breeding pair
Two animals mating
A breeding pair is two animals—one male, one female—kept or observed together for reproduction.
The term appears in wildlife biology, conservation, and animal husbandry: The sanctuary has three breeding pairs of California condors.
Population counts often use breeding pairs as the unit: Only twelve breeding pairs remain in the wild.
