seedbank

Crop diversity archive

A seedbank is a facility that stores seeds for long-term preservation, protecting genetic diversity against crop failure, climate change, or extinction.

The most famous is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.

In ecology, seedbank also refers to the dormant seeds naturally present in soil, waiting for conditions favorable to germination.
