natural regeneration
Unaided ecosystem recovery
Natural regeneration is the process by which forests or other ecosystems renew themselves without human planting—through seeds dispersed by wind, animals, or gravity, or through sprouting from existing root systems.
Foresters distinguish it from artificial regeneration, where seedlings are planted deliberately: The clearcut was left to natural regeneration rather than replanted.
