scrims

Translucent theater fabrics

Scrims are lightweight, loosely woven fabrics used in theater and film production.

When lit from the front, a scrim appears opaque; lit from behind, it becomes transparent, creating dreamlike or reveal effects.

The word also refers to similar mesh materials used as dust covers on construction sites.

In gaming slang, scrims are scrimmages—practice matches between teams: We have scrims tonight against the top-ranked squad.
