screen savers
Idle display graphics
Screen savers are programs that display moving images or patterns on a computer monitor after a period of inactivity.
Originally designed to prevent phosphor burn-in on CRT monitors—where static images could permanently mark the screen—they became largely decorative once LCD screens eliminated that problem.
I set up flying toasters as my screen saver.
Now mostly nostalgic, they've been replaced by power-saving sleep modes.
