screensaver
Monitor's dormant display
A screensaver is a program that displays moving images or patterns on a computer monitor after a period of inactivity.
Originally designed to prevent burn-in on older monitors—where static images could leave permanent marks—screensavers became decorative, displaying flying toasters, starfields, or family photos.
Modern screens rarely need protection, but screensavers persist as visual idle states and light security measures.
