scotoma

Partial sight loss

A scotoma is a blind spot or area of diminished vision in the visual field, often caused by damage to the retina or optic nerve.

Migraine sufferers sometimes experience a scintillating scotoma—a shimmering arc that temporarily obscures part of their vision.

Figuratively, scotoma describes a mental blind spot: He had a scotoma for his own faults.
