scotomas
Holes in sight
Scotomas are blind spots or areas of diminished vision within the visual field, surrounded by areas of normal sight.
A scotoma may be temporary—as with the shimmering blind spot that precedes some migraines—or permanent, caused by damage to the retina or optic nerve.
Figuratively, scotomas describe mental blind spots: He had a scotoma for his own faults.
Singular: scotoma.
