ritual scarring
Ceremonial skin marking
Ritual scarring is the deliberate creation of permanent scars on the body as part of cultural, religious, or social practice.
In many African and Indigenous cultures, scarification marks important transitions—puberty, marriage, tribal membership—or serves as decoration.
The process involves cutting, branding, or abrading the skin, sometimes with substances rubbed in to raise the scar.
Distinguished from self-harm by its communal sanction and symbolic meaning.
