sandpits

Children's digging areas

Sandpits is the plural of sandpit, a hole or excavation from which sand is extracted, or a shallow enclosure filled with sand for children to play in.

The latter sense is more common in British English, where Americans would say sandbox.

The children spent the afternoon in the sandpit.
