sandglasses

Grain-filled timers

Sandglasses are timing devices that measure intervals by letting sand flow through a narrow passage between two connected glass bulbs.

When the upper chamber empties, a set period has elapsed.

The hourglass is the most familiar type, traditionally measuring one hour: The sandglasses were turned every half hour to mark the watch.
