egg-timer

Boiling duration measurer

An egg-timer is a small timing device, traditionally a glass vessel with sand that runs from one chamber to another in a set period—typically three minutes, the time for a soft-boiled egg.

The term now applies to any kitchen timer used for brief intervals: Set the egg-timer for five minutes.
