sidewinders
Sideways-moving desert vipers
Sidewinders are snakes that move across sand in a distinctive lateral looping motion, throwing their bodies sideways to gain traction on loose surfaces.
The term applies especially to a North American rattlesnake species.
Extended uses include a sideways punch in boxing and the Sidewinder heat-seeking missile.
Figuratively, a sidewinder is someone shifty or untrustworthy.
