giant salamander

Huge aquatic newt-relative

Giant salamanders are the largest living amphibians, aquatic creatures that can grow over five feet long.

Native to East Asia and North America, they inhabit cold, fast-moving streams and rivers.

The Japanese and Chinese species are endangered; the American hellbender is smaller but similarly prehistoric in appearance.

All breathe partly through wrinkled, loose skin.
