active service
Wartime military deployment
Active service is military duty during wartime or in a combat zone, as distinguished from training, reserve status, or peacetime garrison life.
A soldier on active service faces the dangers and demands of actual operations: He was killed on active service in Afghanistan.
The phrase sometimes extends to any current full-time military duty, though active duty is more common in American usage.
