run-off

Water seeking gutters

Run-off is water that flows over land rather than soaking in—rainfall draining from roofs, streets, and fields into streams or sewers: Agricultural run-off carries pesticides into the watershed.

The term extends to any overflow or excess that drains away.

In elections, a run-off is a second contest held when no candidate wins a required majority in the first round: The two top candidates will face each other in a run-off.
