drainfield
Underground wastewater area
A drainfield is the underground component of a septic system where wastewater disperses into the soil after leaving the septic tank.
It typically consists of perforated pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches, allowing effluent to filter through soil layers where bacteria complete the treatment process.
Drainfields require specific soil conditions and adequate space to function properly, and homeowners are often advised not to plant trees nearby or drive heavy vehicles over them.
The inspector said our drainfield needed to be replaced.
