retrocession
Giving territory back
Retrocession is the act of ceding something back to a former owner or jurisdiction.
In insurance, it refers to a reinsurer transferring some of its assumed risk to another reinsurer—essentially reinsurance of reinsurance.
In political contexts, retrocession describes territory being returned to a previous sovereign power: The retrocession of Hong Kong to China occurred in 1997.
The term also appears in real estate when property rights revert to a prior holder.
