ranked-choice

Ordered ballot method

Ranked-choice describes a voting system where voters rank candidates in order of preference rather than selecting just one.

If no candidate wins a majority of first-choice votes, the last-place candidate is eliminated and their voters' second choices are redistributed.

This process continues until someone reaches a majority.

The city adopted ranked-choice voting to avoid costly runoff elections.

Proponents argue it reduces negative campaigning since candidates seek to be voters' second choice as well as first.
