romanising

Making letters Western

Romanising is the British spelling of romanizing, the present participle of romanise.

It refers to the process of converting text from a non-Latin writing system into the Roman alphabet, as when Chinese characters are rendered in pinyin or Japanese is written in romaji.

The term also applies to bringing something under Roman influence or making it conform to Roman Catholic practices.

The committee debated standards for romanising Arabic place names.
