chain lift
Towed uphill mechanism
A chain lift is the mechanism that pulls roller coaster cars up an incline, typically the first and tallest hill.
A motorized chain running beneath the track catches the train and hauls it upward; the distinctive clicking sound comes from anti-rollback dogs engaging the chain.
The chain lift ratcheted us slowly toward the drop.
