roadside bomb

Guerrilla warfare weapon

A roadside bomb is an explosive device concealed along a road, designed to detonate when military or civilian vehicles pass.

The term became prominent during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, where such weapons—often called IEDs (improvised explosive devices)—were a leading cause of casualties among coalition forces: Three soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb.
