revolutionary figures

Leaders of upheaval

Revolutionary figures are people who played significant roles in political revolutions or who fundamentally transformed a field or way of thinking.

The term most often refers to leaders of political upheaval—Washington, Jefferson, and other revolutionary figures of the American founding—but extends to anyone whose work or ideas mark a decisive break from what came before: Darwin and Einstein are revolutionary figures in science.
