Emiliano Zapata
Agrarian reform martyr
Emiliano Zapata was a Mexican revolutionary leader (1879–1919) who commanded peasant armies in the south during the Mexican Revolution.
His rallying cry "Tierra y Libertad" (Land and Liberty) and demand for agrarian reform made him an enduring symbol of resistance against land dispossession.
Zapata remains iconic in Mexican national identity and leftist movements worldwide: The Zapatistas took their name from Zapata.
