retired number
Jersey permanently shelved
A retired number is a jersey number permanently withdrawn from use by a sports team to honor a former player or coach.
The number becomes a tribute that no future player may wear: The Yankees retired number 42 for Mariano Rivera.
Teams typically display retired numbers on banners or plaques in their arena or stadium.
