adieu

Parting word, French

Adieu is a farewell, more formal and final than goodbye.

French for "to God"—commending the departing person to divine care—it suggests a parting that may be permanent: He bid adieu to his homeland.

The plural is adieux or adieus.

In casual use, adieu can be playfully dramatic: Adieu, my friend!
