residuum

Left after processing

Residuum is a formal or technical term for what remains after a process—a residue.

In chemistry, it's the matter left after evaporation, distillation, or combustion.

In law, the residuum of an estate is what's left after specific bequests are distributed.

The word sometimes appears in philosophical or scientific writing where *residue* would sound too informal: The residuum of doubt lingered.
