rehoming

Finding new owners

Rehoming is finding a new home for something, almost always a pet.

When owners can no longer care for an animal, they rehome it—placing it with a new family rather than surrendering it to a shelter: We had to rehome our dog when we moved abroad.

The term sounds gentler than "giving away" and implies careful placement rather than abandonment.
