rootball

Transplant's soil core

The rootball is the mass of roots and surrounding soil that forms at the base of a plant.

When transplanting, you dig up or slide out the entire rootball to minimize damage: Gently loosen the rootball before placing it in the new hole.

Container plants develop rootballs shaped by their pots; trees and shrubs in the ground have larger, less defined ones.
