redistrict

Carve new zones

To redistrict is to redraw the boundaries of electoral districts, typically to reflect population changes revealed by a census.

The process determines which voters fall into which districts for congressional or legislative representation.

Redistricting becomes controversial when boundaries are manipulated for partisan advantage—a practice called gerrymandering: The state legislature redistricted to favor the ruling party.
