reconstruction era
Post-destruction rebuilding phase
The Reconstruction Era was the period in American history following the Civil War (1865–1877) when the federal government attempted to reintegrate the former Confederate states and establish rights for freed slaves.
The era saw constitutional amendments abolishing slavery and guaranteeing citizenship, followed by fierce resistance and the eventual restoration of white supremacy in the South.
