Jim Crow era
American apartheid era
The Jim Crow era was the period of legally enforced racial segregation in the American South, roughly from the 1870s through the mid-1960s.
Named after a Black caricature in minstrel shows, Jim Crow laws mandated separate facilities for Black and white Americans—schools, restaurants, drinking fountains, train cars.
My grandmother grew up in the Jim Crow era.
The era ended with civil rights legislation in the 1960s.
