recessing

Creating a niche

Recessing is the act of taking a recess or creating a recess.

When a court or legislative body recesses, it temporarily suspends proceedings: The judge announced they would be recessing for lunch.

In construction and design, recessing means setting something back into a surface or wall, creating a niche or indentation: They're recessing the lighting fixtures into the ceiling.

The term applies equally to formal breaks and physical insets.
