razorbills

Black-and-white auks

Razorbills are black-and-white seabirds of the North Atlantic, related to puffins and murres.

They have distinctively thick, blade-like bills marked with white lines—hence the name.

Colonial nesters on rocky cliffs, they dive for fish and can fly underwater.

The species is the closest living relative of the extinct great auk.
