rail ties
Wooden track supports
Rail ties are the heavy wooden or concrete beams laid perpendicular to railroad tracks, supporting and spacing the rails.
Also called railroad ties, crossties, or sleepers (British).
The ties distribute the weight of trains across the track bed and hold the rails at the correct gauge: Workers replaced rotting rail ties along the mountain route.
